Chess riddle Explained – Black to Move,

Checkmate in 1

In this position, it’s Black to move, and the task is simple: find a checkmate in one move.

At first glance, the board looks busy. White’s King is on g1, surrounded by pawns and pieces. Black’s forces are well-developed, and the Queen sits on c7, scanning the board for weaknesses. Let’s break it down step-by-step.

Step 1: Spot the King’s Position

The White King is on g1 and appears to have a pawn shield on f2, g2, and h2. However, the pawn on h2 is not there — instead, that square is empty. This is the key to the solution.

Step 2: Identify Escape Squares

Ask yourself: if I put the King in check, where could it run?

  • h1 – Occupied by the Rook (White’s own piece blocks escape).
  • g2 – Guarded by Black’s pawn on f3.
  • f1 – Covered by Black’s Knight on g3.
Result: The King is already heavily restricted.

Step 3: Find the Delivery

Black’s Queen has a perfect path to h2. Moving the Queen from c7 → h2 delivers check directly to the King.

Step 4: Verify Checkmate

  • King Capture? No — White cannot capture the Queen on h2 (protected by the Knight on g4).
  • Block the Check? No — there’s no way to block a Queen’s attack on h2 in one move.
  • Escape? No — all escape squares are covered or occupied.

This means Qh2# is checkmate.

The Final Move:

1… Qh2#
Black’s Queen sweeps to h2 and ends the game immediately.

Lesson Learned:

This puzzle teaches:

  • How to recognize a boxed-in King.
  • The importance of coordinating pieces — here, the Knight and pawns work together to remove all the King’s escape routes.
  • The power of a Queen strike to a weak back rank.

Final Thought: Even in a cluttered position, a checkmate can be hiding in plain sight. Always scan for trapped Kings and open lines for your most powerful pieces.
