In chess, some moves don’t just push the game forward — they shift the balance completely. One of the most powerful tactics that can change the course of a game is the fork.

A fork happens when a single piece attacks two or more enemy pieces at the same time. This forces your opponent into a dilemma, as they can usually only save one of the threatened pieces.

Let’s look at this position from a real riddle:

♟️ Black to move.

At first glance, it looks like White’s rook on c5 is aggressively placed, and White has strong central pawns. But then comes the game-changing idea:

 

👉 Bd4+

This bishop move checks the White king and attacks the rook on c5 at the same time.

  • The White king must respond to the check.
  • Once the king moves, Black can capture the rook on the next move.

In one stroke, Black not only gains material but also flips the momentum of the game.

♚ Why This Works Strategically

  1. Forcing Moves Rule – Checks, captures, and threats limit your opponent’s choices. Always look for them first.
  2. Dual Purpose Moves – A great tactic often serves two purposes at once. Here, the bishop checks the king and threatens the rook.
  3. Piece Coordination – Notice how the black bishops dominate diagonals. Properly placed pieces often “see” tactical shots like this.
