♟ Puzzle Answer — White to move: 1. Qxg7#

Puzzle Answer — White to move: 1. Qxg7#

Move: 1. Qxg7# — White captures on g7 and delivers immediate checkmate.

Why this is mate (plain English)

  • The queen lands on g7 and attacks Black’s king.
  • After Qxg7 the Black king has no legal squares to run to: adjacent squares are blocked or controlled by White.
  • No Black piece can capture the queen on g7, and there is no possible interposition to block the check.
  • Because capture, block and flight are all impossible, the position is a legal checkmate.

Tactical ideas behind the finish

  • Exploit weak pawns around the king. g7 (and f7/h7 in similar positions) is often the key weakness in king safety.
  • Coordinate major and minor pieces. The queen penetrates because other White pieces (bishops/rooks/knights) have already limited the king’s escape routes.
  • Timing and calculation. A direct capture like Qxg7 only works when you’ve already removed or neutralized potential defenders — trust your calculation before committing.

Quick coaching takeaways

  • Always check for mating nets around g7/f7 — they appear far more often than you think in the opening and middlegame.
  • Before accepting material or making “obvious” moves, verify whether your opponent’s king is vulnerable to a final tactical shot.
  • Practice pattern recognition: once you’ve seen the Qxg7 motif a few times, you’ll spot it instantly in your own games.
